“There and Back” is an abstract version of the painting “Line Dancing.” It is inspired by the same photograph that I took at Cusheon Lake on Salt Spring Island. But this one is much looser and the generous use of yellow and teal make it very cheerful. It evokes what it would be like to have lily pads in a backyard swimming pool. This painting also plays a lot with transparencies. In fact, all of the underpainting is visible. The purple opaque lines help delineate the shapes of the lily pads whereas the contrasting smudge helps balance the composition.
